Morpheus: A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing

Morpheus: A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing

My mother always said my bleeding heart would never fail to lead me to trouble. She wasn't wrong. This is the story of how I tried to help out a friend and how he left me hanging.

Some of you know Edward Morefield, some of you don't. Most people know him by his seller handle, morpheus_multiverse. I met Morpheus at NerdyCon in 2022. I liked Morpheus, he has a presence and charisma about him and he has a way of making a person feel important when he engages with them. I was on the road a lot in the last two and a half years working conventions so I would see him at shows often. I even invited him out to the STOW event last year where the photo above was taken. Morpheus took up a role in a retailer collective called the near-Mint All-Stars, he ended up representing an up and coming artist, then it was announced that he had been tapped to be the exclusive variant program director for Massive Publishing. He was respected and well liked and he was starting to go places. Then, somewhere along the way, it all went sideways.

Over the past year and a half or so, Morpheus sold a bunch of signed books & exclusives. Some at MegaCon Orlando back in February 2024, some go back further than that. He had accumulated a short box full of books that needed to be graded. As he tells it, after MegaCon he dropped off this box of signed books with a "facilitator" to be submitted. There was no information, no list of buyers, nor any indication of who had signed the books and when/at what show. So, naturally, this facilitator ignored the box and waited for Morpheus to provide some context. It never came. It is my understanding that it was two months before Morpheus called his facilitator to ask about these books, and the box of raw books was handed back over to Morpheus at that time and he was told it was too late to submit them. That was his story.

Some time in June or July I heard through the grapevine that Morpheus had been de-platformed from eBay Live. This is when I started to hear rumblings of how things were being said about Morpheus not fulfilling orders and people getting refunds. People who were close with him were worried that he was being cavalier about serious allegations. They were making claims about his spending habits and people started to notice he was buying expensive gifts and treating his girlfriend to a lavish lifestyle.

I had made the decision to drive from Florida to San Diego for SDCC. I had never driven across the country before, so I rented a minivan, filled it with product and headed across the nation at my own pace. It was awesome. On my way out there I spent some time thinking about what Morpheus was going through, and how people were calling him a scammer. As someone who likes to see the best in people, and I had seen honest goodness in this man, I felt bad for him. I know all too well that at any time in business most of us are just one bad decision away from losing our grip on things. This is what I felt was happening to Morpheus, so I felt moved to reach out to him to ask him for his side of the ordeal and try to be there for him, even if that was just to let him hear a friendly voice and vent his frustrations. He brought me up to speed and I told him I wanted to help. I asked him to compile a list of creators who had signed these books of his and I would try to help him come up with some options.

Morpheus came over to my AirBnB in San Diego on Wednesday or Thursday and after seeing some of our fellow streamers I guess he made the decision not to attend the convention. He was only there at the house for a few minutes, it felt like I saw him, said hello, then when I turned around he was gone. The next time I saw him was the Tuesday morning as we were loading up to vacate the AirBnB. Morph showed up and started helping us load our vehicles with outgoing mail and luggage. We had to be out of the house by 11am and we got out with seconds to spare and again, it was like Morpheus dropped a ninja bomb and was gone.

It wasn't until I had driven 5 days back across the United States and unloaded the minivan that we noticed that Morpheus had left that short box of books in my rental. He snuck and slid that box of signed books into my van and never said a single word to me about it. I was so perplexed. That same day I started getting messages from people on all platforms, Instagram, Facebook, etc, asking me if I had their books and would I check to see if their books were in my possession. How the hell did anyone know I even had these books when I didn't know I had them? That is a great question, I'm glad you asked. The night before, Morpheus had gone live on Whatnot after being off platform and basically in hiding for months, and started telling his followers that Kyle Willis had their books and not to worry they would all be getting their graded books back soon and Kyle was going to make everything okay. Well, this was news to me. I waited for the call from Morpheus. The call never came. A month went by and I tried to ignore the fact that I had these books. I asked some peers for advice, their advice was all over the place. At this point I knew that Morpheus wasn't on the up and up and I have to admit it crushed me a little. I was now in possession of a radioactive box of books and had been drawn into someone else's string of bad decisions and and at the end of the day, I didn't want to leave myself in a position to be viewed as part of his scheme. I maybe should have mailed the books back to him, but the possibility of them getting damaged in transit was something I didn't want hanging over me.

I ultimately made the decision to submit these books to CGC and have JSA authenticate the signatures. I explained to Morpheus the plan and on October 19th I sent him an invoice for the cost of the grading which he assured me he would make payments toward. Over the course of the following month he made several promises to send payments and get into a rhythm of paying off the invoice week by week. The promises were empty. The payments never came. I see now that he never had any intention of making it right. He is everything they said he was. And now I'm left holding the bag. A bag that cost me four grand.

This is a screenshot of the last time I heard from Morpheus. 32 days ago. I called him just now before posting this and he didn't answer.

So that is the story of how I got sucked into the psycho circus that is Edward Morefield. This is a Google photo album of the slabs.

Let's hear those opinions. Hit up the comments and let's hear what you have to say.

Wow! 4 of those were mine! 😂 Been so long I don’t even remember which ones they are other than the Batman of world Scotty sketch variant. At least I know it was a 9.8 🤣 I hate that you got sucked into that. He is why I don’t buy anything from AGK (his son)

Seems like the community is full of skullduggery. Another popular seller ghosted recently and owes me a $400 book. I suspect by reviews I’ve read that there are more people out there with lighter wallets. What WhatNot and most sellers don’t tell you is that after 30 days you can’t get a refund even if your book is supposed to be getting graded. I would recommend that anyone who wants a graded book with a signature send it in themselves and don’t make the other mistake I did and let a seller tell you they’ll get something signed in the future. If the book doesn’t already have the signature you want either plan to get it yourself or don’t buy the book. There’s even more to my story, but these points will do for now.

PS: I’m sorry to hear that you got stuck holding the bag in your incident. The collectors are lucky that you’re one of the good guys in the community. It’s unfortunate that being the good guy got you burned so badly this time.
