Every year, as spring rolls around, there’s one event that stands out on my calendar like a shining beacon of joy: The Old School Comic Show, presented by Little Giant Comics. This one-day extravaganza in Concord, New Hampshire, isn’t just a comic convention; it’s a celebration of everything I love about the comic book community. It’s no exaggeration to say that this event feels like Christmas to me — a day filled with camaraderie, creativity, and nostalgia that I eagerly anticipate year after year.
At the heart of The Old School Comic Show is Jay Brodnick, the owner of Little Giant Comics. Jay is more than just an organizer; he’s the soul of this incredible event. From the moment you walk through the doors, you can feel the warmth and enthusiasm he pours into making everyone feel welcome. Jay treats his guests like royalty, whether you’re a dealer, an artist, or an attendee. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of getting to know Jay personally, and I’m proud to call him not just a friend, but a confidant. His passion for comics and dedication to fostering a sense of community is truly inspiring.
A Star-Studded Lineup
The Old School Comic Show consistently attracts some of the biggest names in the comic book world. Past guests have included legends like Al Milgrom, Mike Royer, David Michelinie, Jim Starlin, Mark Bagley, Keith Williams, and Jim Steranko. These are the creators behind some of the most iconic stories and characters in comic book history. Having the opportunity to meet these legends, hear their stories, and get their autographs is an experience that every comic fan dreams of.
The Saturday Night Tradition
One of the highlights of the weekend is the Saturday evening dinner that Jay hosts for the dealers and guests. It’s not just a meal; it’s an event in itself. Jay always goes above and beyond, even featuring an impressive ice sculpture as the centerpiece. I’ll never forget the year Jim Starlin was a guest and the ice sculpture was an Infinity Gauntlet. I even got Starlin to reenact the iconic snap for a photo — a memory I’ll cherish forever. This year’s theme was Venom, honoring the presence of creators like Sam De La Rosa, Mark Bagley, Al Milgrom, and David Michelinie. It’s these personal touches that make The Old School Comic Show feel so special.
The Charm of Concord, New Hampshire
Part of what makes this event so magical is its setting. Concord, New Hampshire, is a delightful town that exudes charm. Every visit feels like coming home. Over the years, I’ve explored local apple orchards, discovered cozy microbreweries, and even gotten my haircut at a local barber shop. The town’s welcoming atmosphere perfectly complements the friendly vibe of the show itself.
A Must-Attend Event
For me, The Old School Comic Show isn’t just an event; it’s a tradition. It’s a day to reconnect with old friends, meet my comic book heroes, and immerse myself in the world of comics. No matter what life throws my way, I know I’ll be there, as long as I draw breath. If you’ve never attended, I can’t recommend it enough. Come for the comics, stay for the community, and leave with memories that will last a lifetime.
Whether you’re a lifelong collector or a casual fan, The Old School Comic Show is an experience you won’t want to miss. Mark your calendars, pack your bags, and join us in Concord, New Hampshire, for a celebration of all things comics. You’ll be glad you did!
